The size and type of house provided for rabbits will depend upon the population of stock and the species or type of stock the house is meant for. Generally, the floor can be a concrete floor with a strong or solid block foundation.
In the tropics, the walls of rabbit houses are short, about 1-2 meters from the ground, and the other parts are made with wire mesh upwards to the roofing level.
Roofing materials such as asbestos sheets, aluminum sheets, corrugated iron sheets, plastic sheets, or thatched mesh are used to provide shade or roof for livestock houses. Various types of roofs, ranging from monitor roofs, A-shaped roofs, semi-monitor roofs, gable roofs, and lean-to or shed roofs, are used in rabbit houses.
However, irrespective of the housing method or type adopted by a particular farmer, the house should meet the following aims: Protect stock from unfriendly climatic conditions such as heavy rainfall, sunshine, wind movement, etc.
Provide adequate conditions necessary for the good health of animals. Provide protection against theft of stock. Provide protection against wild animals and other predators that are likely to attack stock or transmit diseases to stock.
Facilitate all farm operations such as feeding, watering, medication, etc. The house must be cost-effective. It must be spacious. It must be easily cleaned. It must be well-ventilated. It must protect the kittens from escaping. The type of housing must depend on the class of rabbit to be reared.
