Soybeans, botanically known as Glycine max are versatile legumes that can be used to make a variety of delicious and nutritious foods. From tofu to soy milk to tempeh, soybeans can be transformed into a range of tasty and healthy dishes. In this article, we will discuss how to make soybeans from scratch.
There are sevens steps to take while making Soybeans. Found out what the seven steps are here:
Step 1
Soak the Soybeans: The first step in making soybeans is to soak them. Soaking soybeans helps to soften them and reduce their cooking time.
To soak the soybeans, rinse them thoroughly in cool water and then place them in a large bowl. Add enough water to cover the soybeans by a couple of inches and let them soak for at least 8 hours, or overnight. After the soybeans have soaked, drain the water and rinse them again.
Step 2
Cook the Soybeans: Once the soybeans have been soaked, it’s time to cook them. There are several ways to cook soybeans, but one of the easiest is to boil them.
Place the soybeans in a large pot and add enough water to cover them by a couple of inches. Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook the soybeans for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until they are tender. You can also cook soybeans in a pressure cooker or slow cooker, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cooking times.
Step 3
Remove the Soybean Skins: After the soybeans are cooked, you will need to remove the skins. Removing the skins will give the soybeans a smoother texture and make them easier to blend.
To remove the skins, drain the cooked soybeans and rinse them in cool water. Take a handful of soybeans at a time and rub them between your hands to loosen the skins. The skins will come off easily, and you can discard them as you go. Repeat this process until all of the soybeans are skinless.
Step 4
Blend the Soybeans: Once the skins are removed, it’s time to blend the soybeans. You can use a blender, food processor, or immersion blender to blend the soybeans. Place the soybeans in the blender or food processor and add enough water to cover them by a couple of inches.
Blend the soybeans until they are smooth and creamy. You may need to do this in batches if you have a lot of soybeans.
Step 5
Strain the Soybean Milk: After blending the soybeans, you will need to strain the soybean milk to remove any remaining solids. You can use a cheesecloth or a fine-mesh strainer for this step.
Line a strainer with cheesecloth or place a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl. Pour the blended soybeans into the strainer and let the liquid drain through. You may need to use a spoon to press the soybean milk through the cheesecloth or strainer.
Step 6
Boil the Soybean Milk: Once the soybean milk is strained, you can boil it to pasteurize it and remove any unwanted flavors. Place the soybean milk in a large pot and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the soybean milk for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will help to remove any beany flavors and give the soybean milk a more neutral taste.
Step 7
Sweeten and Flavor the Soybean Milk (Optional Method): If you want to sweeten and flavor the soybean milk, you can do so at this point. You can add sugar, honey, or maple syrup to sweeten the soybean milk, and you can add vanilla extract or cocoa powder for flavor. Be sure to stir the soybean milk
In conclusion, making soybeans from scratch is a relatively simple process that can yield a nutritious and versatile ingredient for a variety of dishes. By soaking, cooking, removing the skins, blending, straining, and boiling the soybeans, you can create a smooth and creamy soybean milk that can be used as a dairy-free alternative in recipes that call for milk.
