Some Tips to Observe in Snail Farming

Snail farming business also known as Heliciculture or Heliculture or snail rearing is the process of raising edible land snails, primarily for human consumption or cosmetic use. The meat and snail eggs can be consumed as escargot and as a type of caviar respectively.

Snails also produce Mucus which is commonly known as snail slime and the mucus has medical properties and is used in cosmetics. Snails are Hermaphrodites meaning that a particular snail can act as a male as well as also act as a female.

Snail farming or snail rearing can either be reared as subsistence snail farming level or for commercial snail farming business level where you raise snails in large quantity and sell them to others for consumption or other purposes.

Meanwhile, Snail farming for beginners is very easy as snail farming does not require much knowledge to understand. As a beginner in snail farming business, all you need to do is carry an expert along on undergo a training in an already well established snail farm to acquire more practical knowledge about snail farming to guide and assist you establish and run a successful snail farm.

Snails are also cold-blooded animal and therefore their feeding activities are bound to be influenced by their environment, time and season. In preparing food for snails (snail food or snail feeding), the temperature inside the pen is hugely important, ensure that the snails are comfortable.

Snails survive best in about 27ºc to 28ºc temperature with high humidity of over 80%, the soil of the snail house must be loose with good calcium high in organic matter and water content. A snail house should not be loose, it should be a close house to avoid pilfering and the site must be protected from the wind.

Normally before now, children and villagers pick up snails from the bush for consumption but because of the high demand of snail meat, snail rearing has become part of animal production and has become a profitable venture for people to invest in no matter how little they started.

For you to be able to operate a successful snail farming business even as an existing snail farmer or an intending snail farmer, below are some of the basic tips to observe in your existing snail farming business or intending snail farming business:

1. Don’t buy your snail in the market if u want to start   farming snail rather buy from a known snail farm

2. Don’t give your snail salty food or contaminated food

3. Don’t allow flies to enter your farm

4. Always visit your farm at night around 7pm up cause snails are more active at night

5. Its’ advisable to change your snail feed daily

6. Paw-paw and paw-paw leaves are very good

7. Give them calcium supplement cause it help in their shell growth.
