Sustainable development in agriculture aims to ensure a sustainable increase in agricultural production, improve the global supply chain, decrease food losses and wastes, and ensure that all those who are suffering from hunger and malnutrition have access to nutritious food.

Factors that ensure sustainable food production include land availability, healthy soils, water, and genetic resources.

Ways to Control these Factors to Ensure Sustainable Development in Food Production

1. Land and Healthy Soils

Boosting yields on existing agricultural lands by practicing the innovative systems of farming aim to improve productivity including the restoration of degraded lands through sustainable agricultural practices would also relieve the pressure of having to clear more forests for agricultural production.

2. Water Management

Wise management of source water through improved irrigation and storage technologies combined with the development of new drought-resistant crop varieties can contribute to sustainable drip lands productivity.

All these practices will assist to ensure sustainable agriculture and food security.

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), to be sustainable, agriculture must meet the needs of present and future generations for its products and services while ensuring profitability, environmental health, and social and economic equity.

Sustainable agriculture must nurture healthy ecosystems and support the sustainable management of land, water, and natural resources while ensuring food security.

Sustainable agriculture also requires a system of global governance that promotes food security concerns in trade regimes and trade policies and revisits agricultural policies to promote local and regional agricultural markets.

However, in addition to preserving the earth’s resources, sustainable agriculture benefits the environment by helping maintain soil quality, reducing erosion, and preserving water.

3. Farmers should be educated more about the importance of agriculture in relation to adequate food production and sustainable development to encourage enhancing agricultural productivity through innovations to ensure maximum yields.

4. Parents should teach their kids the fundamentals of agriculture especially concerning farming activities to encourage them, and children all over the world need to understand that agriculture is not just farming; it is a sustainable way of life, that way, children may tend to love agriculture rather than have the misconception that agriculture also known as farming is a dirty work practically meant for the poor.

5. Government should ensure the availability of some other factors such as transportation, resources availability, policies, cost of farm equipment, and input which minimize the effect of education on the agricultural productivity of farmers

6. Finally, there is a need to see farming beyond being a dirty job or being meant for the poor as wrongly portrayed by the masses who often equate farming business to poverty thereby discouraging those who intend to practice agribusiness globally.
