The agricultural tractor provides a great source of power, which has almost entirely replaced the power of horses or humans for the many heavy and time-consuming tasks carried out on farms. Current tractors may be classified according to traction, use, and size of the tractors.

Tractor types may be classified according to wheel or track systems and include:

  1. Wheel tractors
  2. Triangle or 3-wheel tractors
  3. Four-wheel (2-wheel drive) tractors
  4. Four-wheel drive tractors
  5. Track-type tractors

The wheel-type tractor is by far the most widely used for agricultural purposes. The 4-wheel type is the most common, with both front and rear (back) wheel treads adjustable for use in row crops.

1. Track-Type Tractors: These tractors are propelled by heavy metal devices known as tracks. While they are not widely used in agriculture, they are well-adapted to hilly areas and are ideal for earth moving and land clearing.

Tractors may be classified according to use and/or size as follows:

  1. Utility tractors
  2. Large field tractors
  3. Two-wheel drive tractors
  4. Four-wheel drive tractors
  5. Orchard and vineyard tractors
  6. Lawn and garden tractors
  7. Industrial tractors

The present-day farm tractor is a very useful machine, capable of supplying power for numerous farm tasks. One of the main tasks absorbing this power is the basic cultivation or tillage of the land. The type of tractor used on the land depends on the type of work to be done.

Tractor types include both wheel and track-type tractors. Wheel types include utility-sized tractors, large 2-wheel drive tractors, and four-wheel drive tractors. Four-wheel drive tractors are equipped with adjustable wheel treads for row crop use.

Specially designed tractors are available for orchards, vineyards, lawns, gardens, industrial use, and other specialized tasks.
