Some of the basic things I love so much about snail farming business otherwise referred to as snail rearing is the fact that it is less stressful when compared to other livestock farming operations like poultry, pig farming etc. amazing right? Lol!

Snail farming also known as snail rearing is actually one of the lucrative agribusinesses you can venture into especially in a commercial snail farming level where you have to sell your snails for consumption and other purposes in exchange for money.

Funny enough, using the right management practices you will also discover that the profit margin among them is really not that much as snail farming is also a very lucrative business as well as other animal husbandry businesses.

Today we are going to be discussing about the benefits of snail farming business and why people should try to invest in snail farming operation.

Comprehensive Snail Farming Guide

Snail meat popularly called “Congo meat” is consumed in many countries around the world. Meanwhile in some countries, snails are considered a delicacy for the rich because of its nutritional benefits.

Snail meat, also called escargot, is high in protein and iron, and contains almost all of the amino acids needed for human nutrition.

In Nigeria for instance, Snail is a popular meat for many Nigerians in the especially in the rural areas mostly in the rain forest belt, where it is collected from the wild. The potentials for its domestication and commercialization in the country has not been fully harnessed or exploited, although many studies and experience has shown that snails farming is highly profitable and productive if well managed with best practices.

Nutritionally snail’s meat is high in protein (12 – 16%) and Iron (45 – 50%), low in fat (0.5 – 0.08%) and contains almost all the amino acids needed by man, being also rich in vitamins. Apart from the nutritional benefits it is also known to have medicinal properties and usages.

In Nigeria, from the rural perspective snails have become an income earner to the rural dwellers who are making a living from picking snails from the wild (Rain forest) and gathering to sell in the markets and roadside. They usually collect snails in the raining season when snails are mostly found.

Snails are usually hermaphrodites (they can be both male and female), so to get the snail eggs, all you need is a couple of adult snails. Their mating process is rather aggressive but you should not intervene if you want it to be successful.

Meanwhile depending on the species, the amount of eggs might be different. Usually, it is about 50-100 eggs, so be prepared for lots of tiny baby snails! Below, you can find out how to take care of the eggs and how to hatch them.

Put some plants in the breeder for your baby snails to crawl and snack on when they hatch. Both land and aquatic snail eggs need to stay moist, so make sure you spray them regularly, so that they do not become dry and crusty. If your eggs have dried out completely, it means that you are too late, sorry.

On an average, snail meat contain 16 grams of protein per 100 grams of edible meat. This protein is considered to be of high quality because it contains all the essential amino acids required by the human body.

The protein content of snail meat is similar to the protein found in pork and beef, but snail meat come with a much lower fat content. In addition to containing significant sources of protein and low amounts of fat, snail meats are also good sources of iron, calcium, Vitamin A, and a number of other minerals.
