Today we are going to discuss about the different species of pigs we have along with their unique features and characteristics. Below are the different species of pigs we have around the world as well as their different unique characteristics:
1) Yorkshire Pig
They are characterized with the following:
1) They are white in color.
2) They have erect ears.
3) Their average litter size is 13 pigs per sow.
4) They have a slow growth rate.
2) Berkshire Pig
They are characterized with the following:
- They are black and white in color.
- They have with erect ears.
- They have a white color on all four legs, face, and tail.
- They occasionally have a splash of white on their bodies.
3) Tamworth Pig Species of Pigs
They are characterized with the following:
- They appear golden-red in color.
- They are known to be great foragers.
- Their faces are slightly wide between the ears and jowl light.
- They have large and erect ears.
- They have red coats which makes them adaptable to various climates and also protects them from sunburns.
- They are very intelligent and agreeable in disposition.
- They are prolific and able to produce and care for large litters.
- Their piglets are vigorous and often have 100% survival rate.
- Both their males and females reach a mature weight of about 500 – 600 lbs (227 – 272 kg).
4) Mulefoot Pig Species of Pigs
They are characterized by the following:
- They are mainly black in color.
- They have medium flop and pricked ears, falling forward but not covering their entire face.
- They have a soft hair coat.
- They have a solid, non-cloven hoof.
- They can also be great pastured pigs.
5) Hereford Pig
They are characterized with the following features:
- They appear red and white in color.
- They have superior feeding qualities.
- They also have at least, three white legs.
6) Large Black Pig Species of Pigs
They are characterized with the following:
- They are excellent foragers.
- They also have a solid black snout to tail.
- They have a snout and long strait face.
- They have long deep bodies.
- They are very huge black pigs and are rare to find.
7) Poland China Pig Species of Pigs
They are characterized with the following:
- They appear black in color with six white points on their face, feet, and switch.
- Their ears are floppy.
- They have a stubby black tail.
8) Chester White Pig

They are characterized with the following:
- They appear white in color, which dresses out to a light pink color.
- Their faces appears dished.
- They have medium fall floppy ears.
- They also have a full thick coat.
- They are heritage hogs and superior muscles.
9) Hampshire Pig
They are characterized with the following features:
- Their ears appears erect .
- They appear black in color with a white belt.
- They are used for breeding purposes.
- They are a heritage breed.
10) Landrace Pig
They are characterized with the following:
- They appear white in color.
- Their ears droop and slant forward.
- They have the ability to furrow and raise large litters.
11) Duroc Pig
They are characterized with the following:
- They have markings on their body.
- Their ears are droopy.
- They don’t have any white belts or white feet
